These past 11 days have been a long strange trip indeed.
While emptying another box of useless documents I found an old planner, and, lo and behold, my cousin's phone number was in there. It hadn't changed in years. (I have a penchant for saving documents. Poor shredder has been working over time) Margaret is my Uncle Joe's daughter. We talked for over an hour:) I also got her brother's current number, but haven't contacted him yet. Don't like to bother anyone at work. I am so grateful for connecting with family.
The healing continues.
I did finally buy a digital recorder and a portable scanner. Now I can preserve stories as told in the story teller's voice. Wish this technology had been around when my Grandpa was alive. Grandpa Julian loved to read poetry. I had recorded his voice on a portable reel-to-reel, but the tape deteriorated before I could get it to a digital specialist.
Friday, 11th, Char and I went to see my Auntie Alice. We took the restored picture of Mom with neighbors. She was able to identify them!!!! And I recorded her. No more copious notes that I can't decipher sometimes:)
Saturday, 12th, went to the studio to pick up some flower pots Dave made. Bren and I went for a caffeine fix at Starbucks. Yummy.
Sunday, 13th, went to church, then to Walmart to meet with Veronica. We stood and talked while she was working. Go figure. We had lunch and am looking forward to meeting with her brother--another cousin. Sorry to say I forgot to call him.
Monday, 14th, went with Char to see Sister(Isidorita) a cousin whose death is expected soon. Sister is being cared for by her daughter-in-law Lisa, son Larry and other family. She also, like my Mom, opted to stop dialysis after a few trips to the hospital for infections. We prayed with her, got to see family and reminisce about old times. One of her son's Rick is a Smoke Jumper, as is his son Ricky. We laughed about my broken pinkie which the doc had set and casted., I broke the cast off because I couldn't change my daughter's diaper:) That was 42 years ago!!! I broke it on a hole in his sock. We were all at the new park in Duranes, I was pushing him on the swings, his shoe fell off and my pinkie caught on the hole in his sock. Freak accident. My pinkie is still pretty crooked:) Battle scar of having fun with family. I am amazed that anyone would risk their life by jumping into a fire. But am also grateful for their courage that impacts people and wildlife.
Ricky's 18 month old son was in ICU for a respiratory infection. We all tried to reassure him of the excellent care provided at University Childrens' Hospital. Ricky's distress was palpable. His deep love for his son is refreshing.
My heart was glad to see Sister's descendants gathered round her. She walked Duranes almost every day, stopping at my Mom's and other family and neighbors homes.
Gretchen came into town and we attended an IRS protest on the 15th. Loved doing something to let people know. We held up our signs, along with others, as traffic drove by. There were only 3 negative responses. Most people honked, waved and gave a thumbs-up sign. One of the negatives was delivered by 2 women in a car that was waiting for the green light. During the time it took for them to wait for said green light, they didn't say a word. But---as they sailed through, they rolled down their window and screamed obscenities. LOL. Thanked them for their opinion;) Rush hour still moves slow. Guess they were afraid to say anything before.
We called John, an RT we worked with for years. We were the 3 musketeers. He couldn't come out and play because his ex-wife died from brain cancer, and he needed to be available for his sons. She, Linda, was a really great lady. John did say that we were probably up to some mischief:) Of, course. Laughter, lunch, and a protest:))
Had lunch with MK and Becky on the 16th. Then we hit the mall. Gordman's to be exact. Great store. Had never been in in there. MK is working in ICN at UMC (UNMH). She mentioned the need for preemie caps geared more toward boys. Right up my alley.
Picked up my great-grandmother's picture at Picture Perfect where I had taken it for restoration. I was sorely disappointed with the result. Plus they colorized it! This picture was taken around 1860! Plus, there was no CD. So, had to order the pic in black and white along with a CD. Hopefully the scanned pieces are on the CD. Some of it looks so amateurish:( The manager said, "Well, ma'am, you really can't see anything." Had to hold my hand up indicating for him to stop talking. Told him I had been looking at this picture for over 25 years and could see it. I will probably continue to use their services because they are in town. I am not keen on sending these precious pictures out via snail mail.
17th, got up late, insomnia, got presentable and headed to Lowe's to buy dowels to use as doorstops on sliding glass doors. I did learn something from my ex. Thought they would be able to cut them to size. No dowels. So bought a small hand saw, some potting soil, and headed to Hobby Lobby. They DID have dowels:) Then Wal-Mart for needed supplies. Met Char at Garcia's for dinner. I was told by my healthcare provider that I needed to be on a low fat diet. Of course, this brought on a craving for a bean and chicharrone burrito. Although, I have been eating "healthy". After dinner we headed to Michael's. I must confess that I purchased more yarn at Hobby Lobby and Walmart. But, I've made 4 preemie caps:) Insomnia is a wonderful thing?
Yesterday was also my youngest son's 41st birthday, April 17. Too bad he isn't alive to celebrate. He died on February 16, 2006. He requested to be buried by my Mom, his Grandmother. He was laid to rest at her feet. R.I.P Scotty. I wonder if he knew that he would die 3 months after her. No telling. He had chosen a life that sent him careening out of control, to the depths of one of the worst and oldest, abused drugs, heroin, during his short life. He will never have an impact on his granddaughter. She is told about him, but at 6 years old now, I don't think she really grasps the idea of a dead grandfather. I hope, as she gets older, that her interest will become a reality. To that hoped for end, I am putting together as many pictures as possible for her. In chronological order, I think.
This was posted my his daughter on fb. I need to get copies of her pics. Almost every picture shows him smiling with anticipation and hope. You can't see the torment. He hid it well.
Scott's daughter, my granddaughter, has been on a mission of diet and exercise. I'm very proud of her. She has lost 41 lbs and is very motivated.
I haven't been in direct contact with friends & family that have pictures of Scott these past few days. Took a break from genealogy while still emptying boxes and organizing. Meeting with friends and immediate family is more important right now. Did receive an email from Alicia with more info. Will work on it next week.
18th woke up tired. Go figure. So I dedicated the day to my pajamas, crocheting preemie caps. reading and finally typing this entry. It's well past midnight and I am not sleepy. Ambien is a wonderful thing.
I read a devotional every morning and also do a yearly Bible study. Sometimes the Scripture is so compelling that I have to right it out to contemplate the depth of His Word.
As Easter approaches, the talking heads are all about the papyrus found in Egypt. Supposedly, this ancient document shows that Jesus Christ was married. Why do people grasp on to these things during Easter and Christmas when Christians are celebrating His sacrifice and birth. Satan is a liar!
May you all rest in the knowledge of the greatest person ever born. He impacted our world to the point of changing how we refer to dates. BC and DC. BC is referred to as Before The Common Age by some.
Thank You Lord for Your love to Your people.
